Sagrada Família, one of Antoni Gaudi’s chefs d’oeuvre, is a landmark attraction of Barcelona. Gaudi gained a keen sense of sculpture and space construction from the unobtrusive and imperceptible influence of his family business as blacksmith that had been passed down for generations. The Mother Nature had been a source of fascination for Gaudi since his tender age. His acute powers of observation made him realize that perfectly straight lines cannot be found in nature. This perceptive observation was well reflected in his architectural style; to wit, the embodiment of nature. As a result, his architectural masterpieces feature not so much straight lines as organic curves that brim with vitality. “The straight line belongs to men, the curved one to God,” said Gaudi. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família designed by Gaudi is the first incomplete building listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gaudi even moved to the construction site of Sagrada Família in order to work exclusively on it. Unfortunately, a tragic road accident caused his death, preventing him from witnessing its completion.

Originally called Bei-She-Wei, the Bei-Hu community in Chiayi City used to have fertile plains suitable for farming, and therefore sustained a prosperous and thriving agricultural economy. However, the social change and land development resulted in the leveling up of the community’s farmlands and ponds that were subsequently transformed into dwelling sites. The lovely rural features have now faded into history. Bei-Hu Community Development Association was ergo founded in view of this situation. In addition to serving as an active local organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing rural culture, the association has spared no effort to undertake many other missions such as promoting and perpetuating folk artistry, religious culture and gourmet cuisine, reconstructing local history and culture, as well as forming the collective identity in this community. Moreover, in collaboration with scholars and experts, the association carried out many interviews with elderly residents, through which it collected fascinating stories suitable for editing profound and comprehensible teaching materials that may serve as the historical texts for the benefit of later generations. Since 2008, the association has deepened the residents’ understanding of the community’s culture and has engaged in the cultural exchange with other communities in Taiwan by virtue of theatrical performance, which not only perpetuates the local culture but also broadens the audience’s horizons.

Song from the Forest

Ethnomusicologist Louis Sarno has led a legendary life since twenty-five years ago when he was listening to a riveting piece of music on the radio. Following his heart, Sarno left from the United States for Central Africa where he has tried to find the source of this sound of heaven and has stayed to date. His source-searching journey ended up in the settlement of Bayaka Pygmies, a tribe described as “little men who live on the land of trees and fairies at the foot of the Mountains of the Moon” in Greek mythology, commonly known as the Pygmies nowadays. He has recorded more than a thousand hours of “Bayaka,” a type of music as heavy and intense as the heartbeats of the earth. Sarno married a local woman and has a son, living a life of “using elephant’s collarbones as tooth brush bracket and soap dish.” This documentary affectingly narrates a touching family story. It faithfully demonstrates the sentimental connection between humanity and wildness as well as the perfect blend of civilization and primitiveness. It is a modern epic whose plot unfolds across the urban jungle and the rainforest.

Every culture is destined to be submerged in the long river of history. Tibet in Song is a documentary featuring not only how Tibetan people protect their culture, music and theater but also how they struggle under the harsh rule of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Tibet is often known as Xizang in Chinese. The ballads perpetuated among Tibetan People vividly indicate that they used to be an ethnic group who had been leading a happy, joyful life. However, they are driven into exile due to PRC’s coercive sinicization policy. Since Tibetan culture is disappearing, protecting their own culture has become a matter of concern to Tibetan people. Through his lens, the director Ngawang Choephel shows us the condition of Tibet, addressing the question as to whether Tibetan people still lead a life as wonderful as described in their ballads — “Here is the center of heaven, the heart of the world…, In this beautiful county, people were born sages and heroes who act according to righteous principles…”

Filmed by Taiwanese director Ho Chao-Ti, My Fancy High Heels is a thought-provoking documentary honored by many prestigious awards. It draws attention to the little-known bare facts behind the production of the fancy high heels worn by those stylish women in New York, unmasking the global capitalist system and production chain based on the exploitation of labor. Keeping the perspective of a bystander, the director spent two years filming and tracing the production process from the United States and China to the border of Russia. This documentary unreservedly shows every stage of the brutal process through which slaughters acquire cowhide. The slaughters kill the calves and strip the calfskin, displaying a bizarre sense of calmness. The workers have to endure the smell of glue and other strange odors pervading the factory, producing fashionable high heels in a Taylorized manner. The dramatic contrast between the countrywomen who breed the calves for a living and the socialites who wear luxury high heels made of calfskin reflects the profound class difference in the society. The high heels’ click-clacks on the street of New York and the cries of calves in the countryside echo each other, which draws our attention to the unpleasant fact behind these luxuries. The facts this documentary presents are visually stunning and worthy of serious contemplation.

This documentary records artist Lin Hong-Wen’s prolific career as an artist that spans 17 years. The way of his life is as multi-faceted as his artworks. Lin used to run the Wu-Fei St. Bar in Tainan, made a cameo appearance in Jun T. Lai’s Powerful Aphrodisiac (Tainan version), and created sculptures out of small, thin metal sheets. He also built large-scale outdoor steel structures in collaboration with others. The uniqueness and wide scope of Lin’s artistic creativity are faithfully reflected in his ever expanding artworks. The title of this documentary not only represents the variation of hair color in the course of time by its literal meaning, but also symbolizes the constantly innovating artworks of this artist par excellence.
