The filming of this documentary spanned forty years. It elaborates on the development of feminist art and its relationship to the anti-war and civil rights movements arising in the 1960s. It not only explicates how historical events unleashed the first wave of feminist movement against the cultural regime, but also meticulously documents the efflorescence of feminist art in the 1970s. This documentary combines interview footages and clips of renowned feminist artists such as Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro and Rachel Rosenthal. With the reversal of expressive form and the turbulent ideological revolution, the Guerrilla Girls’ artistic practice not only epitomizes the critical thinking on issues regarding gender, race and class, but also gives a timely warning to the corrupt patriarchal bureaucracy in the art world. The director collected nearly a hundred hours of thought-provoking interview clips, offering a vivid portrayal of the women predicament and the breakthroughs made by women artists. In sum, this documentary brings backstage artists back to the context of art, highlighting women artists in their true colors by reference to the process of art revolution.

A Pungent Patriot gives prominence to the Taiwan-based iconic avant-garde artist Mei Dean-E. Not only does he excel in getting to the core of historical and political problems through his works, but he also pioneers the artistic style of frequently using political totems. His works carry his own peculiar brand of humor, but not without the occasional touch of pungency. Such a creative style faithfully reflects not only his innovative thinking but also his constant self-adjustment and search for national identity. This documentary also touches upon the policy of Cleaning-up in Countryside enforced by the Nationalist government in Taiwan after the February 28 Incident of 1947. To avoid scourge, many Taiwanese painters flourishing during that period had since converted to a more conservative painting style. However, the tragic fate of imprisonment befell the coeval left-wing artist Huang Rong-Can for his stiff opposition to this policy and insistence on his own artistic philosophy. Belonging to different generations though, Mei erected a monument to express his tremendous admiration for Haung’s indomitable spirit performed in both words and deeds.

This documentary chronicles Kosal Khiev’s metamorphic journey from a criminal in the United States to a first-rate Cambodian poet. The invitation to perform at the 2012 Cultural Olympiad in London not only represented a significant landmark in his life but also prompted him to pursue a solo career as a rap poet. In political philosophy, freedom is defined by the presence of specific prerequisites. All human beings are born free and equal, yet they shall take responsibility for their own actions. This documentary vividly portrays Khiev’s struggle for a foothold in the society, his forced expulsion from the United States, and his idea of freedom reshaped by his experiences in London. The considerable pressure created by literacy education and international performance made him well aware of the new freedom he has enjoyed and its concomitant onerous responsibilities. However, no sooner did the final curtain come down, than all the glories faded into memory. Khiev has no choice but to forlornly confront the fundamental question as to how he could survive and thrive since his mind belongs to nowhere.

In addition to Bollywood, there are ballad troupes who cast themselves adrift in India, sharing the sheer misery of the Dalits in the throes of Indian caste system, protesting against the system with their signature sound of singing. The caste system was abolished after Indian independence in 1947. However, it has deeply rooted in the India society, and the Dalits have been languishing in rampant discrimination. In the 1997 anti-caste demonstration in Mumbai (known as the Ramabai killings), the police shot dead several unarmed Dalits, followed by the suicide of the Dalit poet Vilas Ghogre in protest over that incident. Although the police officers who fired guns in the Ramabai killings were accused of murdering the Dalits, the judicial proceedings against them have been prolonged. The director Anand Patwardhan not only followed the judicial proceedings but also recorded the beautiful songs sung by those ballad singers who seek to expose social injustice through their engagement in civil rights movements against the society’s reactionaries. It took the director fourteen years to finish the filming, during which some signers have enjoyed huge popularity with TV watchers, while others have been vilified by the government as sympathizers of the armed opposition forces and were ergo forced to disband. Nonetheless, the poems and songs left by the latter have been recorded as great legacies in this documentary and will be perpetuated by their brave and fearless heirs.

The Arab Spring, also known as the Arab Awakening or the Arab Uprisings, is a revolutionary wave of demonstrations and revolts emerging out of concern for democracy and economic reform in the Arab World in the early 2010s. This wave then swept over the countries of the Arab League and its surroundings such as Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and Syria. The director Marco Wilms spent two and a half years visiting Egypt seven times, recording a group of young Egyptian artists who orchestrated a revolutionary movement during the Arab Spring to preserve their culture with a riotous profusion of art forms such as graffiti, murals, and music as well as a variety of enlightening actions. These artists not only pioneered an art form that belongs to the new age, but also connected it to Egyptian cultural edifice. In other words, they create art in a way of preserving their own culture and history. They articulated their concerns with artistic practice, proving that art may be used as a weapon against injustice and an essential tool for defending democracy and culture. This documentary also unveils the process of the revolution and the anarchy in Egypt caused by the defeat of the Muslim Brotherhood between 2011 and 2013.

Driven by the aspirations for freedom and art, a group of young artists successively moved into a tranquil and insignificant village located in the historical site of the Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan), northwest of Beijing. Since 1990, they had settled down in the village and been engaged in the pursuit of art. The consequence became apparent in the establishment of the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village. The works by these artists have received considerable attention from foreign media. However, their creations satisfied neither the strict criteria of the propaganda painting defined by the government nor the official ideology espoused by the Communist Party, which alerted the authority to their true intentions. Subsequently, these artists were forcibly expelled from this artist village by the government. This documentary illustrates the happenings in this village during 1995. The director Hu Jie witnessed the whole process because he was one of the residential artists there. In face of the ridiculous yet extremely real situation, he held a Hi8 camcorder in his hand, filming his fellow artists who embodied the spirit of creation and insisted on their own art philosophies despite living in penury. The director also recorded the forced expulsion of these artists due to the aforementioned unforeseen happenings. Moreover, this documentary contains the follow-up recordings of these artists who led a vagrant life after leaving the artist village.

Imprisoned in a purgatory-like labor camp for twenty-three years, Chinese writer Chang Xian-Chi has led a vicissitudinary life. His autobiographical writing, The Anecdote in Gelag, is concerned with the miseries of the prisoners in the Yunan Prison Farm. He drew an analogy between the labor camp and The Gulag Archipelago, an underground publication that had circulated in the Soviet Union over a decade. This documentary begins with the writer’s return to the Leimaping Labor Camp in Sichuan province, the Gulag Archipelago of China, with the accompaniment of the director. Chang recalled his traumatic memories, recounting his little-known miserable past in the camp, lamenting his tortured mind and body and the horrible fate to which the gods had condemned him.

The painter Chen Wu-Zhen has expressed passionate enthusiasm for art since his tender age. Throughout his youth, he aspired to be an artist and studied hard in the department of fine arts despite his family’s poor economic conditions. As a painter of great passion, he also paid particular attention to the social injustice when Taiwan was in the middle of the White Terror. Chen had been jailed for two years during his military service for offending the government. He became the youngest prisoner of conscience who received the shortest prison sentence in Taiwan at that time. This harrowing experience wrecked his prospects for a successful career as an artist. Casting his brushes aside, he had taught fine arts at an elementary school after he was discharged from the prison. It was not until his later realization of what he should do to restore dignity that he resumed his career as a painter, striving to prove that the government had committed the careless mistake of putting him in jail.

The 798, an old factory built under the auspices of East Germany in the 1950s, has become a prominent yet controversial destination for the arts due to the introduction of contemporary art. As an important artist village in Beijing, it was closed down together with nearly twenty art spaces at the turn of the 2010s because the government planned to demolish partial buildings in the Chao-Yang District, and as such epitomizes the “modernization” of this great city. To expel the residential artists, the government had cut off the water and electricity supply to the 798, making the artists suffer in the harsh winter. Many pieces of their works were damaged as a consequence. The former factory held many memories for the residential artists. For them, The Cold Winter Plan was an important plank in the series of artistic efforts targeted at protecting and defending their rights over the 798. By happenstance the director Zheng Kuo visited the site of The Cold Winter Plan when he was filming another documentary 798 Station. “Demolishing plans are common in China. However, it is unusual to see in this case that the artists were violently treated. I try to make this documentary as objective and fair as possible, and expect it to serve as a mirror that reflects us in our true colors,” said the director. This documentary also demonstrates the changing Chinese mentality towards the complex relationships among democracy, civil rights and economic interests in the ongoing process of social transformation.
